Why Should I Have A Fresh Start
Over time, the accumulation of decaying plant matter, fallen leaves, and organic waste settles at the bottom, creating a toxic, compacted sludge layer. This sludge deoxygenates the water, chokes out plants, fuels blanketweed, and threatens your fish.
When an aquatic ecosystem reaches this critical tipping point, standard maintenance is no longer enough. To save the habitat and restore clarity, a complete biological reset and deep clearance are required to give your garden feature a fresh, healthy start.
Our Pond Fresh Start service is an intensive, top-to-bottom seasonal deep clean designed to completely reset your water feature without the cost of a full structural restoration.
What is a fresh start?
A Fresh Start is exactly that—a complete biological reset for your water feature. Our expert team will carefully extract and safely house your fish and amphibians in specialist, aerated holding tanks while your pond undergoes a comprehensive drainage, silt removal, and structural deep clean. Before reintroducing your fish and plant life, the water column is rebuilt and balanced using beneficial live bacteria and essential minerals to prevent new pond syndrome.
This structural reset is also the perfect opportunity to introduce vibrant new planting to your water.. If you are looking to evolve your landscape, our design team will offer bespoke suggestions tailored entirely to your personal vision.
The Timeline & Assessment Process
A Fresh Start typically takes between 1 to 4 days, depending on the volume of water and accumulation of organic silt. A member of our team will always visit your property prior to scheduling the work to assess the pond's condition, check access, and provide an accurate, fixed timescale. They will be happy to answer any questions you have—just be warned, our team absolutely loves to talk about all things water!
When is a Fresh Start Required?
New Client Baseline: We require any pond we have not previously managed to undergo a Fresh Start before joining our contracted maintenance programme. This is crucial so we can establish the structural integrity of the liner, inspect underwater pipework, and identify any hidden areas of concern.
System Upgrades: We strongly recommend a full reset whenever a new filtration system is installed, ensuring your new equipment functions at maximum efficiency without being instantly choked by old sludge.
Routine Ecosystem Management: For long-term ecological health, we advise a Fresh Start at a minimum of every three years, though heavily stocked or beautifully mature features may require an annual deep clean.
The Winter Window: The absolute ideal circumstances for this service are during the winter months, when your fish are naturally dormant and plant life is entirely inactive, ensuring the absolute minimum of environmental stress.

Fresh Start & Fish Safety FAQs
Q: Is it safe for my fish and frogs to have the pond fully emptied and cleaned?
A: Yes, absolutely. The safety of your livestock is our highest priority. Before any drainage begins, we transfer your fish, newts, and frogs into specialist, aerated holding tanks filled with their original pond water to eliminate stress. We monitor them closely throughout the day and safely acclimatise them back into the pond only after the water chemistry has been professionally rebuilt and balanced.
Q: Will a full empty and clean destroy the "good" bacteria in my pond?
A: Standard tap water can disrupt an ecosystem, which is why we do not simply refill your pond and walk away. Where possible, we always reintroduce your original water back to your pond, thus minimising any stress on your aquatic life. Once the physical silt and toxic sludge are cleared, we proactively inoculate the water with a premium blend of live beneficial bacteria and minerals. This instantly jumpstarts the natural biological cycle, preventing "new pond syndrome" and keeping your water safe and clear.
Q: What do you do with the toxic sludge and organic waste you remove?
A: We manage the entire cleanup responsibly. All organic silt and plant waste removed from your feature is neatly transferred to your garden's compost zones or borders if requested, as it makes an exceptionally nutrient-rich fertilizer for your soil. Alternatively, we can arrange for removal from your property if that is preferred.
Q: What happens if you discover a leak or a torn liner during the Fresh Start?
A: Emptying the pond allows us to perform a full structural integrity inspection on your liner, concrete, or glass. If we uncover a puncture, a failing seal, or damaged pipework, our team can immediately advise you and carry out professional aquatic repairs before the pond is refilled. Should a full replacement be required, our experts are Firestone trained specialists who can source and install a premium new liner.
Emptying a pond fully allows our specialist technicians the opportunity to check the integrity of the pond and proactively address any issues for you before they arise. Once thoroughly cleaned, water levels are rebuilt with healthy bacteria levels.
